A Castle in the Clouds

Featured in City Living Magazine and Homeworks Sourcebook

Imagine a winding drive that reveals a newly constructed stonefront European manor house perched on a hilltop with breathtaking views. How does one design a kitchen for a newly constructed castle? Peter Lawton was tapped for this challenge and the result is not only beautiful, but it meets the casual elegance requirements of this modern family.

Look in one direction in this centerpiece kitchen (literally in the center of this spacious home) and you'll see a ruggedly elegant family room with dramatic fieldstone fireplace wall. Look in another and you enjoy a glass wall with vistas of patios, flower gardens and the treetops beyond.

With wall space at a premium, Peter optimized the open floor plan by designing a massive island, which functionally delineated a breakfast area (complete with built-in coffee/cappuccino station that is the hit of the home) from the food preparation on the other. Under counter refrigeration is housed in the island, facing the breakfast area, to minimize trips to the main refrigerator.

The cooktop and built-in refrigerator present a wall statement that not only anchors the kitchen, but creates the culinary castle look. Cherry cabinetry, granite countertops and an intricate mosaic tile backsplash offer a European country feel in keeping with the home's style. Pilasters, corbels, crown and dentil mouldings add to the richness of the space, preserving an old-world ambience among state-of-the-art appliances. One long wall of cabinetry seamlessly houses a microwave, steam oven, and plenty of storage space.

The space feels solid and formidable, like the house itself, and invites both adults and children to be themselves.
