A picture is worth a thousand

An Empty-Nester Kitchen Transformation

As seen in This Old House Magazine, April 2000

It began with the range going on the fritz. When the owners of this 1940s cape in a Boston suburb learned that their tried and true stove could not be repaired and the new models did not fit in the space allotted within their existing kitchen, they decided it was a sign. Now that their children were out on their own, this couple commissioned Peter Lawton to help them realize a total transformation.

When the project began, the existing kitchen illustrated how the typical 1970s family lived. Orange print wallpaper, dark wood cabinets and well-worn linoleum all showed signs of being loved by an active brood.

Now this husband and wife wanted to create a room for the new chapter in their lives. She loves to cook and spends hours in the kitchen. He is a photographer whose schedule often means they only meet over early morning breakfasts and late night suppers...typically served in the kitchen. So, the new kitchen needed to offer her high-quality appliances and a pleasing space that would inspire her culinary adventures, while providing a "niche" for them to have quality time together over meals. This kitchen would truly be designed as the soul of their home.

Peter designed a sophisticated space with finishes and colors that visually expanded the small room. A new greenhouse window (Peter's signature) was custom built to let more light into the room and offer a clear vista of the backyard while standing at or near the sink. Granite countertop and backsplash, combined with a random slate floor, stainless steel appliances and decorative accents give the room a clean, contemporary flair.

Thermador Professional Series cooktop, hood and wall ovens, along with a Sub-Zero refrigerator, provide this cook with the tools she needs to prepare exciting cuisine for her family and friends.

A dramatically lit breakfast/supper bar provides this couple with an intimate setting in which to share their quiet meals.
